What Is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift is essentially a special type of dental bone graft. It is used when the upper jaw is too thin, so if an implant is placed in it, it could penetrate the sinus membrane above. During a sinus lift, we do exactly what the name of the procedure implies — we lift the sinus membrane in order to protect it from a future dental implant. We also place a bone graft beneath it to enlarge the jaw and keep the sinus in its new place.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Sinus Lift?
You might need a sinus lift if you plan to get dental implants in the back portion of your upper jaw. Before you move ahead with tooth replacement, our team will use advanced imaging technology to analyze the positioning of your sinuses and the health of your jawbone. Then, we can determine if a sinus lift is necessary.
A sinus lift is often needed for individuals with a naturally thin or weak jaw, as well as those who have experienced some bone deterioration after the loss of their teeth. In order for the procedure to be successful, you should be in fair overall health and be willing to comply with pre- and post-op instructions from our team.
How Does a Sinus Lift Work?
On the day of your sinus lift, one of the first things we will do is make you comfortable. In addition to administering local anesthesia, we may also use sedation. This can help calm your nerves and allow our team to work efficiently.
After you are prepared, we will get to work. Dr G will use special tools to access your sinus through your upper jaw before gently moving it into its new position. A bone graft will then be secured into place before we close any incisions. The process may take 1 – 2 hours. About 4 – 9 months after your procedure, your mouth will likely be ready to support dental implants.
Sinus Lift Aftercare
Your soft tissue should heal within 2 – 4 weeks after your surgery. In the meantime, you may need to modify your routine so you can protect any vulnerable or sore spots in your mouth. For example, you should avoid blowing your nose, drinking through a straw, or smoking. A soft diet and the use of prescribed medication can reduce pain and help you stay comfortable.
Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions before you leave our office, and you are welcome to call us if you have questions or concerns at any point during your recovery.
