What to Expect When Recovering from a Dental Bone Graft

If you’ve been told you need a bone graft before getting dental implants, you’re not alone. A bone graft is a surprisingly common procedure designed to rebuild the foundation of your jaw so it can properly support your future implants. That said, while the idea of oral surgery may feel a little intimidating, understanding what recovery actually looks like can go a long way toward easing your mind. Here’s a clear picture of what you can expect in the days, weeks, and months after your bone graft.

What Happens Immediately After the Procedure

In the first 24 to 48 hours after your bone graft, some swelling, bruising, and mild bleeding are completely normal and expected. Your oral surgeon will place gauze over the surgical site to help control any initial bleeding, and you’ll want to avoid disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers. Most patients experience their peak swelling around the second or third day, but applying a cold pack to the outside of your face in intervals can help keep discomfort and swelling to a minimum. You’ll also likely be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain relievers to help keep you comfortable.

What Happens During the First Week Following the Procedure

When it comes to your diet, stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups, and smoothies, and avoid anything crunchy, chewy, or hard that could disturb the surgical site. You’ll want to rinse gently with a saltwater solution or prescribed mouthwash as directed, but be careful not to swish aggressively or spit forcefully (this is also why you should never use a drinking straw). Most patients are also advised to avoid smoking entirely, as this can significantly interfere with healing. Overall, by the end of the first week, your discomfort should begin to noticeably decrease.

What Happens One Month After the Bone Graft

Most patients feel considerably better and more like themselves by the second or third week after the procedure. Your swelling and bruising will continue to improve, and you’ll likely be able to reintroduce a wider range of foods into your diet, but it’s still a good idea to avoid anything excessively hard or chewy. Any dissolvable sutures placed during the procedure will typically begin to disappear on their own around this time as well.

As things continue to heal over the next couple of months, you’ll attend follow-up visits to monitor your progress, and before you know it, your mouth will be ready for your dental implants! Recovering from a dental bone graft does take patience, but for most patients, the process is very manageable, and the results are absolutely worth it.
