Like your other teeth, the wisdom teeth are supposed to grow upward through the gums. But in many cases, they can end up growing horizontally instead. Naturally, this can lead to serious problems and typically warrants a wisdom tooth extraction. Below is a closer look at why wisdom teeth may start growing sideways and why this can be a major issue for your oral health.

What Can Lead to Wisdom Teeth Growing Horizontally?

The wisdom teeth usually erupt between the ages of 15 and 25. At that point, all of the other permanent teeth have already emerged; consequently, there simply may not be enough room for wisdom teeth to come in as they should. The lack of space can lead to the wisdom teeth growing sideways.

What are the Consequences of Horizontal Wisdom Teeth?

If your wisdom teeth grow horizontally, you may experience the following troublesome symptoms:

  • The wisdom teeth will be trapped under the gums, resulting in significant pain near the back of your mouth.
  • The wisdom teeth may start crowding your other teeth, potentially damaging them.
  • The trapped wisdom teeth may lead to inflammation of the gums.
  • The location of the wisdom teeth can make them very difficult to clean properly, which can result in gum disease.
  • In rare cases, cysts may appear around the infected wisdom teeth.

How are Horizontal Wisdom Teeth Diagnosed and Treated?

A dentist or oral surgeon can determine when wisdom teeth are growing horizontally by capturing X-rays or CT scans of your mouth. If your wisdom teeth are found to be impacted, then you’ll likely be told to have them removed as soon as possible; leaving them alone could ultimately lead to even more severe problems.

Extracting a wisdom tooth that is trapped under the gums requires surgery. Small incisions will need to be made in the gum tissue in order to access the tooth underneath. Additionally, it may be necessary to divide the tooth into separate pieces that can be taken out one at a time. Rest assured that you will be able to remain comfortable during this process because your mouth will be numbed with a local anesthetic.

Your mouth doesn’t need wisdom teeth to function properly. Thus, if your wisdom teeth are growing sideways, the best thing to do is to have them taken out by a trained oral surgeon as soon as possible. That way, you can put a stop to your discomfort and keep the rest of your smile safe.
